Lighting
Lighting is extremely significant when looking at various genres, as it can easily set the mood and atmosphere for the audience.
Salems Lot 1979
Lighting in horror films usually have that dim effect to create suspense and darkness which emphasises something evil is lurking around them. A strong example is Dracula 1931. As the boy sleeps in the darkened room, smoke appears through the window. This smoke is known as dry ice and can make the setting extremely effective, it also enhances the theme of fear as you do not know what is going to emerge from it. The darkness eats it's way from the outside in, creating almost a spot light on the vampire.

Shadow of the Vampire (2000)
This trailer uses different overlays in order to highlight the setting of the scene. Such as the man being in a darkened prison is shown in black and white, which indicates its a dark and colourless place to be. There is darkness edged around the setting, throughout all of the trailer, regardless of being black or white. There is also flashing lights emerging from the background, very slighly in the picture on the right hand side.

Fright Night (2011)
When looking at the 'Fright Night' (2011) the lighting is very effective as it determines whether you are normal or not. The lighting is very dull, grungy and mostly consists of grey and dirty white colours. It makes the audience think whether or not you should trust this character as the dullness creates a mysterious atmosphere emerging from within. The fact he is emerged half in light and half out could suggest his vampire state as he's half human and half vampire.

30 days of night
Another example of lighting determine character is '30 Days of Night' (2007) in this film they use lighting to purely highlight the darkness within the vampires as well as to show the setting in Alaska.

We explored with lighting by looking for a location with decent, natural lights in order to make our horror trailer effective. We made our way down to the sport hall girls changing rooms and simply switched the lights on and off. As you can see the lighting flickers constantly, as it slowly struggles to turn on, which could reflect on the victims struggling to escape from our torture chamber where we feed our needs and hunger. We found the flickering could potentially work for our trailer as it creates a bickering atmosphere for our trailer and is very metaphoric for our victims who are deprived of humanity.

The use of the flickering lights is seen as effective as it shows the harsh and uncomfortable feel to the trailer. It can be said that the flickering lights can be related to the victims as it shows the struggle for hope, as light metaphorically means 'hope' and 'truth' as the light reveals. The use of the flickering light can be used in our trailer as we can use it to show the victims true self and to let them see the truth of their reality.

Let Me In (2010)
The lighting used in 'Let Me In' is all low key. Even during the day the lighting is kept at a minimum to make an eerie effect. The grey and miserable lighting show the sad lives that both the characters live, the boy is constantly plagued by bullies and the girl is plagued by the curse of immortality. This is perfect for our horror as due to location it will be hard to create a bright day. A grey, dull day will be very easy to do.
Underworld.
Although this movie is mainly action it is still about vampires and despite being created by lightning and guns there is a lot of flashing lights used which is helpful to use as we may use flashing and flickering lights.
The lighting is also kept low key to fit in with the theme of vampires and darkness.
